The Seven Wonders of the World are a group of places around the globe that are considered to be of great importance. There are several lists of the Wonders of the World that have been compiled from antiquity to the present day, in order to catalogue the worlds most spectacular natural features and human-built structures. The classic Seven Wonders of the World were:
- Great Pyramid of Giza, in El Giza, Egypt, the earliest of the wonders to be completed, as well as the only one that still exists in the present day.
- Colossus of Rhodes, in the harbor of the city of Rhodes, on the Greek island of the same name.
- Hanging Gardens of Babylon, in Babylon, near present-day Hillah, Babil province, Iraq; or Nineveh, Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, Iraq.
- Lighthouse of Alexandria, in Alexandria, Egypt.
- Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, in present-day Bodrum, Turkey.
- Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece.
- Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
However, there are also other lists of the Seven Wonders of the World. In 2000, a Swiss foundation launched a campaign to determine the New Seven Wonders of the World. The New Seven Wonders of the World are:
- Great Wall of China
- Chichén Itzá
- Petra
- Machu Picchu
- Christ the Redeemer
- Colosseum
- Taj Mahal
It is important to note that there are many other lists of wonders of the world, including the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, and the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
