Coordinates are a set of values that show an exact position on a two-dimensional plane or a three-dimensional space. They are usually a pair of numbers, or sometimes a letter and a number, that locate a specific point on a grid, known as a coordinate plane. The first number shows the distance along the x-axis, and the second number shows the distance up or down the y-axis. The order of the coordinates is significant, and they are sometimes identified by their position in an ordered tuple and sometimes by a letter, as in "the x-coordinate". The use of a coordinate system allows problems in geometry to be translated into problems about numbers and vice versa; this is the basis of analytic geometry. Common types of coordinates include Cartesian coordinates, map coordinates, polar coordinates, and 3-dimensional coordinates.
