The start date, September 15, is significant because it marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico's Independence Day is on September 16, and Chile's Independence Day is on September 18. The month also includes Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which falls in October within this 30-day period. Hispanic Heritage Month began as a weeklong celebration in 1968 and was expanded to a full month in 1988 by legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan.
