The fast-moving lights in the night sky that people have been seeing are actually satellites launched into space by SpaceX, run by South African entrepreneur Elon Musk, as part of a project called Starlink. Starlink is a network of satellites that offers broadband internet access to countries around the world, with the ultimate goal of blanketing the space around Earth in these satellites. Each time the satellites are launched, they are placed into orbit in batches of 60, with SpaceX aiming to launch roughly two batches every month. As of July 2023, there are over 4,000 Starlink satellites in orbit with plans to deploy more than 10,000 in the coming years. The satellites appear in groups of up to 60 in a long line, and they can be seen moving across the sky from one side to the other. If the lights were all in one line, moving in unison, odds are they were Starlink satellites.
