The little rubber hairs on tires are called vent spews, sprue nubs, tyre nibs, gate marks, or nippers. They are a byproduct of the tire manufacturing process by rubber molding or steaming processes. During the manufacturing process, the raw rubber is injected into a mold, and air pressure is used to force the liquid rubber into all the nooks and crannies. In order for the rubber to completely fill the mold, small pockets of air need to be able to escape because if there is air remaining in the mold, the tires may be in perfect condition. The vent spews happened when the tire is pressurized in the mold. This is an important indicator that the air has been completely vented from the mold. They help to ensure that there are no trapped gases or air bubbles in the tire that could compromise its structural integrity and performance. They do not serve any purpose on the finished tire and have no impact on performance in rainy weather or the overall comfort of the ride.
