Heart failure is a long-term condition that usually comes on slowly, but it can develop suddenly after a heart attack or other problem. The symptoms of heart failure can vary from person to person and may start suddenly or develop gradually over weeks or months. Here are some of the most common signs and symptoms of heart failure:
- Shortness of breath with activity or when lying down
- Fatigue and weakness
- Swollen ankles and legs caused by a build-up of fluid (edema)
- Feeling lightheaded and fainting
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat with shortness of breath, chest pain, or fainting
- Persistent cough, which may be worse at night
- Wheezing
- A bloated tummy
- Loss of appetite
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Confusion
- A fast heart rate
- A pounding, fluttering, or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
If you have one or more of these symptoms, even if you havent been diagnosed with any heart problems, report them to your healthcare professional and ask for an evaluation of your heart. If you experience sudden or severe symptoms, such as chest pain, fainting, or sudden, severe shortness of breath and coughing up white or pink, foamy mucus, call 911 or emergency medical help immediately.
