- Sedimentary rocks : Formed from the accumulation and compression of layers of sediment such as sand, silt, dead plants, and animal remains. Examples include sandstone, limestone, and shale
- Metamorphic rocks : Formed when existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or older metamorphic) are transformed by heat, pressure, or chemically active fluids underground, changing their mineral structure without melting. Examples include marble, gneiss, and slate
