There are two broad categories of ecosystems: terrestrial and aquatic. Terrestrial ecosystems are exclusively land-based ecosystems, while aquatic ecosystems are ecosystems present in a body of water. Here are the different types of ecosystems:

Terrestrial Ecosystem:

  • Forest Ecosystem
  • Grassland Ecosystem
  • Tundra Ecosystem
  • Desert Ecosystem

Aquatic Ecosystem:

  • Freshwater Ecosystem
  • Marine Ecosystem

Freshwater ecosystems include lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and wetlands, while marine ecosystems include oceans and their parts. Forest ecosystems have a huge variety of flora and fauna living together in a specific area, while grassland ecosystems have lower biological diversity than forests but a range of animal species inhabit them. Tundra ecosystems are characterized by low temperatures and short growing seasons, while desert ecosystems are characterized by low rainfall and high temperatures.
