Water towers are used to store and deliver pressurized water to a community. They are used to regulate and maintain pressure and water levels throughout a system. Water towers are elevated structures supporting a water tank constructed at a height sufficient to pressurize a distribution system for potable water, and to provide emergency storage for fire protection. They are able to supply water even during power outages, because they rely on hydrostatic pressure produced by elevation of water (due to gravity) to push the water into domestic and industrial water distribution systems. Water towers also serve as a reservoir to help with water needs during peak usage times. The main benefits of a water tower include meeting peaks in demand without extra pumping power, providing backup capacity in case of a power outage or a fire that requires a large amount of water to extinguish, and improving fire safety.
