The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike is an ongoing labor dispute between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) . The strike began on May 2, 2023, at 12:01 a.m. PDT, and is the largest interruption to American television and film production since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, as well as the largest labor stoppage the WGA has performed since the 2007–08 strike. The writers are striking due to an ongoing labor dispute with the AMPTP over a lack of agreement on a new contract. The key demands of the WGA include:
- Increased funding and job security for writers
- Increase the size of writers rooms
- Limit the use of artificial intelligence in the writing process
- Higher compensation for writers across the board
- Better residuals
- Staffing requirements
- Shorter exclusivity deals
- Appropriate TV series-writing compensation from pre- to postproduction
- Increased contributions to pension and health plans
- Strengthening of professional standards and the overall protections for writers
The WGA has used picketing, protest, and strike as methods to demand their rights. The strike has affected the production of TV shows and movies, and negotiations between the AMPTP and the WGA have not restarted.
