Zoomies, also known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs), are random bursts of energy that dogs and cats experience. During zoomies, animals may run frenetically, often in circles, for a few minutes or less. Some common characteristics of zoomies include:
- Frantic, repetitive behavior such as running in circles or spinning around.
- Dogs may take laps around the yard or continuously circle the dining room table.
- Cats may exhibit similar behavior, which is referred to as "cat zoomies".
Zoomies are a normal and healthy behavior for both dogs and cats, especially in younger animals or kittens. They are often triggered by an excess buildup of energy that is then released in one big burst. Some possible causes of zoomies include:
- Release of tension and anxiety.
- Revved up or aroused state.
- Going outside after being inside for a while.
- Seeing another dog or their favorite person.
- Playing in the snow.
While zoomies themselves are not harmful to animals, a dog running around at full speed without a plan may be in danger of injuring themselves or breaking something. Owners should ensure that their zooming pets are in a safe area, away from stairs, slippery floors, obstacles, and the road.
