To accurately measure blood pressure, it is recommended to measure it in both arms at least once, as the reading in one arm (usually the right) may be higher than that in the left. The arm-to-arm difference in systolic blood pressure is generally 5 points or less
. Here are some tips for properly measuring blood pressure:
- Do not drink a caffeinated beverage or smoke during the 30 minutes before the test
- Sit quietly for five minutes before the test begins
- Use a cuff that fits your arm, as cuffs that are too small can artificially raise your blood pressure reading
- With the cuff on your bare arm, sit in an upright position with back supported, feet flat on the floor, and your arm supported at heart level
- Make sure the bottom of the cuff is directly above the bend of the elbow
If you are only measuring blood pressure in one arm, it is suggested to use the higher arm reading for more accurate results
. However, if double-arm measurements are unavailable, the right arm is preferred for measurement of blood pressure, especially in women
