The artists sketch "The Vitruvian Man" is said to depict the ideal proportions of the male body. It was created by the Italian Renaissance artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1487. The drawing depicts a nude man in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and inscribed in both a circle and square. The drawing represents Leonardo's conception of ideal body proportions, originally derived from Vitruvius but influenced by his own measurements, the drawings of his contemporaries, and the De pictura treatise by Leon Battista Alberti. Leonardo conducted his own research on the proportions of the human body, spending months measuring a number of young men. His inquiries allowed him to break from Vitruvius’s measurements and other depictions of human proportions.
