The asteroid that is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs is known as the Chicxulub asteroid. This asteroid was approximately ten kilometers (six miles) in diameter and struck the Earth slightly over 66 million years ago, creating the Chicxulub crater, which is estimated to be about 111 to 125 miles in diameter. The impact of this asteroid triggered a "mega-earthquake" that lasted weeks to months, and also generated a massive "megatsunami" with waves more than a mile high. The Chicxulub impactor is associated with the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) mass extinction event, which led to the extinction of three-quarters of species on Earth, including the non-bird dinosaurs.
