Mosquitoes are most attracted to people with blood type O. Multiple studies have shown that mosquitoes prefer to bite individuals with type O blood more than other blood types. For example, a 2019 study found that mosquitoes chose type O blood feeders more often than those with types A, B, or AB. Another study from 2004 showed that mosquitoes landed on people with type O blood nearly twice as often as those with type A blood. Blood type A appears to be the least attractive to mosquitoes, with type B and AB falling in between. Additionally, mosquitoes are more attracted to people who secrete blood type antigens through their skin, making secretors more susceptible regardless of blood type. In summary:
- Most attractive blood type to mosquitoes: O (both O positive and O negative)
- Least attractive blood type: A
- Moderate attraction: B and AB
- Secretor status also affects attractiveness to mosquitoes
Blood type, however, is only one factor among many that determine mosquito attraction, which also includes body odor, body heat, carbon dioxide emission, and skin bacteria. Thus, if you have blood type O, you might be more prone to mosquito bites compared to others with different blood types.
