The Statue of Liberty holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left hand with the date of the Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals: July 4, 1776. The tablet represents a book of law and the date of American independence was chosen by the statues designer, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, due to its association with Americas Declaration of Independence. The tablet bears the text of Emma Lazaruss sonnet, "The New Colossus" (1883), which is inscribed on a bronze plaque within the pedestal of the statue. The sonnet includes the famous line, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".
