Orange cats are not a distinct breed of cat, but rather a genetic expression of a cats particular lineage, whether mixed or purebred. There are many breeds of cats that come in a variety of orange, ginger, and red hues, including Abyssinian, Bengal, British Shorthair, Egyptian Mau, Maine Coon, Munchkin, Persian, and American Bobtail. Orange coats can be long, short, striped (tabby or mackerel patterned), tortoiseshell, or calico. Interestingly, most orange tabby cats are male because the gene for orange color is carried on the X chromosome, making it sex-linked. Males only need one copy of the gene to be orange, while females must have two copies to be orange.
