The buttons on a suit jacket depend on the number of buttons the jacket has. Here are the general rules for each type of jacket:

One-Button Jacket: Always button the only button when standing up. Leaving it unbuttoned looks sloppy. When sitting down, unbutton the jacket to prevent wrinkles and keep the button from popping.

Two-Button Jacket: Always button the top button and never the bottom button. Leaving the bottom button unbuttoned is a modern style and helps the jacket drape properly.

Three-Button Jacket: Follow the "sometimes, always, never" rule. Sometimes button the top button, always button the middle button, and never button the bottom button. If you feel like it, you can also button the top button when its colder.

Double-Breasted Jacket: Always button every button except for the bottom button. Some double-breasted jackets have four buttons, while others have six or eight, but the rule remains the same.
When fastening a suit button, gently slide it through the corresponding buttonhole. Be cautious not to force the button through, as it may cause damage or strain on the fabric. Ensure that the button is centered within the buttonhole and lies flat against the suit. Avoid pulling the fabric too tightly when fastening the buttons, as it can create an unsightly pulling effect and compromise your comfort.
