Dogs should not eat the following foods because they can be toxic or harmful to their health:
- Chocolate: Contains caffeine and theobromine, stimulants that can cause heart racing, seizures, and even death. Darker chocolates are more dangerous.
- Grapes and Raisins: Can cause fatal kidney failure in dogs.
- Onions, Garlic, and Chives: Contain compounds that damage red blood cells leading to anemia.
- Macadamia Nuts: Toxic to dogs and can cause vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia.
- Avocados: Contain persin, which can be harmful and cause heart damage.
- Alcohol: Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, breathing problems, coma, and death.
- Raw yeast dough: Can expand in the stomach causing pain and produce ethanol causing intoxication.
- Caffeine: Can cause diarrhea, seizures, irregular heartbeat.
- Salt: Excess can cause dehydration and poisoning.
- Milk and Dairy Products: Some dogs cannot digest lactose causing sickness.
- Fatty foods and fatty cuts of meat: Can cause pancreatitis.
- Artificial sweeteners like xylitol: Highly toxic and can cause insulin release, hypoglycemia.
Other harmful foods include citrus fruits in large amounts, certain nuts (like walnuts), spoiled foods, gum and candy containing xylitol, and sugary foods leading to obesity and diabetes. It is best to keep these foods away from dogs to prevent serious health issues.
