The conflict between Israel and Palestine has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the birth of major nationalist movements among the Jews and among the Arabs, both geared towards attaining sovereignty for their people in the Middle East. The United Nations’ vote in 1947 to partition land in the British mandate of Palestine into two states – one Jewish, one Arab – following the destruction of much of European Jewry in the Holocaust, was a significant event that led to the first Arab-Israeli War. The Palestinian Arabs refused to recognize this arrangement, which they regarded as favorable to the Jews and unfair to the Arab population that would remain in Jewish territory under the partition. After Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948, the fighting intensified with other Arab forces joining the Palestinian Arabs in attacking territory in the former Palestinian mandate. The conflict has continued since then, with various attempts to resolve it as part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, alongside other efforts to resolve the broader Arab-Israeli conflict. The most recent conflict between Israel and Palestine began in early October 2023, when war broke out between Israel and Hamas, the militant Islamist group that has controlled Gaza since 2006.
