Bed bugs are small, reddish-brown, wingless insects that feed on blood, but are not known to spread any diseases to humans. They can come from other infested areas or from used furniture, and can hitch a ride in luggage, purses, backpacks, or other items placed on soft or upholstered surfaces. Bed bugs can also be transferred by attaching onto clothing or luggage that is moved from one infested area to a non-infested area. They hide during the day on beds (mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, headboards) and in cracks and crevices of walls, floors, and furniture, and come out at night to feed on their preferred host, humans. Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near where people sleep, and they can be found in clothing, luggage, bedding, boxes, box springs, mattresses, headboards, and objects near beds. Bed bugs are not drawn to decay or filth, and they can live in any environment, including the cleanest and neatest of environments.
