Blepharitis is inflammation of the eyelids, and its exact cause is not clear. It might be associated with several factors, including:
- Seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows).
- Infection.
- Clogged or malfunctioning oil glands in the eyelids.
- Rosacea (a skin condition characterized by facial redness).
- Allergies, including allergic reactions to eye medications, contact lens solutions, or eye makeup.
- Eyelash mites or lice.
- Dry eyes
The condition can be caused by multiple issues and can be either chronic or acute. Anterior blepharitis is commonly caused by bacteria (staphylococcus) or oily build-up (seborrhea) associated with skin conditions like rosacea, while posterior blepharitis can be caused by clogged oil glands in the eyelids
. Blepharitis can lead to complications such as dry eye, stye, and chalazion. It is a common eye condition that makes the eyelids red, swollen, irritated, and itchy, and it can cause crusty dandruff-like flakes on the eyelashes
. There is no cure for blepharitis, but it can be managed and treated by taking care of the eyelids, such as using warm compresses to soften crust and loosen oily debris
