Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth of bacteria that results in an imbalance of “good” and “harmful” bacteria in the vagina
. While researchers do not know the exact cause of BV, it is known that the condition most often occurs in those who are sexually active
. Douching, not using condoms, and having new or multiple sex partners can upset the normal balance of vaginal bacteria, increasing the risk of getting BV
. BV is not a sexually transmitted infection, but having sex with a new partner or multiple partners may increase the risk of getting BV
. Using an intrauterine device (IUD) has also been linked to BV, especially if there is irregular bleeding, but it is not clear whether it is a direct cause
. BV is not caused by toilet seats, bedding, or swimming pools
