Derealization is a mental state where a person feels detached from their surroundings, and people and objects around them may seem unreal. Depersonalization-derealization disorder is a condition where these feelings keep occurring or never fully go away, and they make it hard for a person to function. The causes of depersonalization-derealization disorder are not well understood, but some people may be more likely to experience it due to genetic and environmental factors. High levels of stress and fear may also cause bouts of depersonalization-derealization disorder. Emotional abuse or neglect during childhood, physical abuse, experiencing or witnessing domestic violence, and having a severely impaired or mentally ill parent are some of the severe stressors that can trigger depersonalization-derealization disorder. Certain drugs, such as hallucinogens, being very tired, sleep deprivation, or sensory stimulation, can also cause depersonalization disorder. The treatment for depersonalization-derealization disorder mainly involves psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, and sometimes medications are also used.
