Hypotension, or low blood pressure, occurs when the pressure of blood circulating around the body is lower than normal or lower than what is needed to supply the organs with enough oxygen and nutrients. There are many different causes of hypotension, including emotional stress, fear, insecurity, pain, dehydration, certain medications, blood loss, and the body's reaction to heat. Other causes include prolonged bed rest, pregnancy, certain medical conditions, and severe allergic reactions. Symptoms of hypotension include light-headedness, unsteadiness, dizziness, weakness, blurred vision, fatigue, and fainting. Severe hypotension can be caused by sudden loss of blood, severe infection, heart attack, or severe allergic reaction.
