Placenta previa is a condition during pregnancy where the placenta attaches low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the opening of the uterus, called the cervix. The exact cause of placenta previa is unknown, but some factors that increase the risk of developing it include:

  • Scarring on the lining of the uterus due to a history of surgery, C-section, or abortion.
  • Having multiple pregnancies, such as twins or triplets.
  • Smoking cigarettes or using cocaine.
  • Being 35 or older.
  • Having been pregnant several times before.
  • Having had in vitro fertilization for infertility.

The main symptom of placenta previa is sudden vaginal bleeding, usually without pain, after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Other symptoms may include mild cramping or contractions in the abdomen, belly, or back. All bleeding during pregnancy should be reported to a doctor for prompt investigation and treatment. If placenta previa is detected early in pregnancy, it usually isnt a problem because it may resolve as the pregnancy grows. However, if it persists, it can cause serious bleeding and other complications later in pregnancy.
