Colon polyps are growths that form on the inside of the colon. While most colon polyps are harmless, some types can become cancerous. The exact cause of colon polyps is not known, but it is probably a combination of environmental factors and genetics. However, certain factors may increase the risk of developing colon polyps, including:
- Age: Most people with colon polyps are 50 or older.
- Family history: Having a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps increases the risk of developing colon polyps.
- Inflammatory bowel disease: Having Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis increases the risk of developing colon polyps.
- Lifestyle factors: Smoking, excess alcohol ingestion, lack of exercise, being overweight, and eating processed foods and too much red meat can increase the risk of developing colon polyps.
- Hereditary disorders: Certain hereditary disorders, such as Lynch syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis, increase the risk of developing colon polyps.
It is important to note that having one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean that a person will develop colon polyps. However, it is recommended that people with risk factors be screened regularly for colon polyps.
