The exact cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to be a complex disorder likely caused by a combination of inherited (genetic) and environmental factors. Most cases of Tourette syndrome are caused by genes, and it is an autosomal dominant disorder, meaning that both boys and girls can be affected, and only one copy of the gene is needed to have the condition. Other possible causes in some cases may be problems during pregnancy, low birth weight, head injury, carbon monoxide poisoning, or inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). Stress and emotional overexcitement can make the condition worse, and learning relaxation techniques can help. There is no cure for Tourette syndrome, but treatments are available, and many people with Tourette syndrome dont need treatment when symptoms arent troublesome.
