The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder where the body mistakenly destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. The pancreas secretes insulin into the bloodstream, which allows sugar to enter cells and produce energy. Without insulin, sugar or glucose cant enter cells and builds up in the bloodstream, causing high blood sugar levels that can damage the body and cause many of the symptoms and complications of diabetes. Different factors, such as genetics and some viruses, may cause type 1 diabetes. Although type 1 diabetes usually appears during childhood or adolescence, it can develop in adults.
