Uterine polyps, also known as endometrial polyps, are growths in the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) . They form when there is an overgrowth of endometrial tissue, and the polyp attaches to the endometrium by a thin stalk or a broad base and extends into the uterus. Although the exact cause of uterine polyps is unknown, hormone levels, particularly estrogen, may play a role in promoting their growth. Many risk factors for uterine polyps involve the body being exposed to high amounts of estrogen, such as age, obesity, and taking tamoxifen, a medication for breast cancer. Symptoms of uterine polyps include irregular menstrual bleeding, bleeding after menopause, very heavy menstrual flow, bleeding between periods, and infertility.
