The gene that causes cystic fibrosis is found on the seventh chromosome. This gene is called the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene, and it is quite large and complex. Over 1,000 different mutations in this gene have been found to cause cystic fibrosis. The most common mutation is called deltaF508. A person will only be born with cystic fibrosis if they inherit two copies of the CF gene, one from each parent. If a person inherits only one CF gene, they are healthy and called a carrier of the disease.
