Dogs can see colors, but not as many as humans. They have two types of cones in their eyes that correspond with blue and yellow, which means their color spectrum is limited to shades of gray, brown, yellow, and blue. This is called dichromatic vision, which is similar to humans who experience red-green color blindness. Dogs can make out yellow and blue, and combinations of those colors, but they cannot see red and green as we do. Reds and greens may appear as shades of gray or brown to dogs. Therefore, throwing a yellow or blue ball is more effective than a red or green one when playing with your dog.
