During a colon cleanse, large amounts of water, sometimes up to 16 gallons (about 60 liters), and possibly other substances such as herbs or coffee, are flushed through the colon using a tube thats inserted into the rectum. In some cases, smaller amounts of water are used and are left to sit in the colon for a short time before being removed. According to a study of healthy volunteers, cleaning the colon prior to colonoscopy removed approximately 1.2 kg of waste. This mainly includes feces and toxins that leave the body. Some alternative medicine practitioners claim that mucoid plaque, a buildup of mucus and other substances, can accumulate in the colon and be removed during a colon cleanse. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. It's important to note that colon cleansing is not necessary for the digestive system and bowel to eliminate waste material and bacteria from the body.
