The Iron Dome is an Israeli mobile all-weather air defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 to 70 kilometers away and whose trajectory would take them to an Israeli populated area. The Iron Dome system was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. The system has three central components: Detection & Tracking Radar, Battle Management & Weapon Control, and the Interceptor Missile. The radar system is built by Elta, an Israeli defense company and subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, and by the IDF. The control center is built for Rafael by mPrest Systems, an Israeli software company. The majority of Tamir missile components are procured through the Raytheon supply chain in the United States. Rafael has partnered with Raytheon through a U.S. based Joint Venture – Raytheon Rafael Area Protection Systems (R2S) – to produce the Iron Dome in America. Raytheon Technologies and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems have formed a joint venture to build the Iron Dome missile defense system in the United States, and the system is widely fielded in Israel.
