Babylon was an ancient city located on the lower Euphrates river in southern Mesopotamia, within modern-day Iraq. Today, Babylon is located roughly 50-60 miles south of Baghdad. Although Babylon was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, there isnt much left to see of the once-unstoppable empire that dazzled Greek historians and enslaved its rivals, most famously the biblical Kingdom of Judah. If you took a trip to Babylon today, youd see a tacky recreation built by Saddam Hussein in the 1970s thats been partially destroyed by decades of war. The ruins of Babylon can be found in modern-day Iraq, about 52 miles (approximately 85 kilometers) to the southwest of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
