It is situated about 45 miles (70 km) southeast of Los Angeles and lies at the east end of the Santa Ana Canyon on the northeastern edge of the Santa Ana Mountains. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 38.9 square miles (101 km2), of which 38.8 square miles (100 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it, or 0.27%, is water.
