The referendum must be held between two and six months after the bill passing both houses of parliament. The Bill which will trigger a referendum is the Constitution Alteration (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice) 2023 and was tabled in federal parliament on March 30, 2023 by Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus. On May 31, 2023, the Bill passed the House of Representatives and passed the Senate on June 19, 2023.
