The United States Marine Corps celebrates its birthday on November 10th every year. On that day in 1775, the Continental Marines were established by the Second Continental Congress. Formal commemoration of the birthday of the Marine Corps began on November 10, 1921, when Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune suggested that the original birthday on November 10, 1775, be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps. Before 1921, the birthday of the Corps had been celebrated on another date, and from 1799 until 1921, the Corps celebrated its birthday, or Marine Corps Day, on July 11.
