Raccoons are attracted to food, water, and shelter, so the best way to deter them is to eliminate access to those three things to the greatest extent possible. Here are some methods to deter raccoons:
- Store food in sealed containers: Store all food that raccoons could conceivably get to, especially pet food, in sealed containers.
- Seal or cover entry points: Seal or cover any entry points, such as pet doors, vents, or your chimney.
- Cut back overgrown trees and bushes: Cut back overgrown trees and bushes that raccoons could use to climb onto your house or attic.
- Plant cucumber: Raccoons hate the smell of cucumber, so plant cucumber along your fence and in your garden.
- Use ammonia or vinegar: Soak a few tennis balls in ammonia and place them where you think raccoons live to send them packing. Or use vinegar on anything they may try to eat.
- Use garlic or cayenne pepper: Raccoons don’t like the smell of either, so you can make a solution to spray around their known entrances to your home or sprinkle the powder around your garden.
- Use predator urine: Use the urine of wolves, coyotes, or bobcats to deter raccoons.
- Install fencing barriers: Raccoons can be kept out of your garden or other areas of your home with the help of fencing.
- Establish a scent-free zone: Keep all attractive scents, like garbage, under close cover. Prevent raccoons from raiding your garbage bins by securing your trash can so that even when tipped over, the lids stay tightly in place.
- Install Nite Guard Solar lights: Predator deterrent lights are the most effective solution to ensure a raccoon-free property.
Its important to note that raccoon repellents and deterrents have limited efficiency at best, and some simply do not work.
