Today, on October 4, 2023, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is conducting a nationwide test of its emergency communications systems. This test will involve two types of alerts: wireless emergency alerts (WEA) and the emergency alert system (EAS) . The test will begin around 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time and will last for about 30 minutes. During this time, cellphones, TVs, and radios across the country will send out an alert with loud sounds. The alert is only a test, but it aims to determine how well the U.S. government’s mass communication systems would work during an emergency. If your phone is on silent, it may automatically change the volume on your mobile device to sound the alarm. However, you can power off your device or put it on airplane mode to ensure the alert does not go off between 2-3 p.m. Wednesday. The alert message will state: “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed” .
