Aaron Hernandez was a professional NFL player who played as a tight end for the New England Patriots from 2010 to 2012. Despite a promising football career, he was arrested and convicted for the first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-professional football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancée. Hernandez was found guilty in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. While on trial for that murder, he was also indicted for a 2012 double homicide but was acquitted in 2017. Five days after his acquittal, Hernandez died by suicide in his prison cell. Posthumously, he was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease linked to repeated head injuries. His conviction for Lloyd's murder was initially overturned following his death but later reinstated upon appeal.
