James Comey is an American lawyer who served as the seventh director of the FBI from 2013 until he was terminated in May 2017. He was known for overseeing the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email controversy and played a controversial role in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. More recently, in September 2025, Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements and obstruction of a congressional proceeding related to his 2020 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison. This indictment came shortly after President Donald Trump publicly called for Comey and others to be prosecuted. Comey has declared his innocence and expressed confidence in the judicial system, stating he is ready for trial.
