Ed Gein committed gruesome acts against his victims; he killed at least two women, Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden, by shooting them. He then mutilated their bodies—in particular, Worden's decapitated and disemboweled body was found hanging in a shed on Gein's property, with her head inside the house. Gein also exhumed corpses from local graveyards and used their skin and body parts to make macabre items such as furniture, masks, bowls, a "woman suit" to wear, and other household objects all crafted from human remains. He aimed to create a suit made of female skin, reportedly to "become his mother" by literally crawling into her skin, influenced by his obsessive and abusive relationship with his mother. He admitted to grave robbing over 40 times but denied having sex with the corpses or cannibalism. His crimes were discovered after Worden went missing and a search led to his arrest. Gein was found guilty of murder but declared legally insane and spent the rest of his life in psychiatric institutions.
