George Washington’s primary livelihoods were as a surveyor and a planter, with extensive later involvement in military and public service. Early in adulthood he built his career first by surveying, then by managing and expanding his landholdings as a planter and, to a lesser extent, a distiller and entrepreneur. He also gained experience as a military officer, which defined much of his public role, and he eventually served as a statesman and the first President of the United States.
