Guglielmo Marconi is credited with inventing the radio by building equipment to transmit electrical signals through the air from one end of his house to the other, and then from the house to the garden. He used radio waves to transmit signals over a distance of several kilometers in 1895, and developed the technology in subsequent years to achieve greater range. Marconis invention proved to be a lifesaving technology for those at sea, and he hoped it would end their isolation and give them a way to call for help. In addition to the radio, Marconi also patented a magnetic detector in 1902, which became the standard wireless receiver for years to come, and a horizontal directional aerial in 1905. Marconi received many honors, including the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1909, which he shared with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy".
