The sayings of Jesus on the cross, also known as the Seven Last Words from the Cross, are seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. The seven statements that Jesus Christ made on the cross were:
- "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34).
- "Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise" (Luke 23:43).
- "Woman, behold your son" and "Behold your mother" (John 19:26-27).
- "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34).
- "I thirst" (John 19:28).
- "It is finished" (John 19:30).
- "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" (Luke 23:46).
These sayings have been widely used in sermons on Good Friday, and entire books have been written on theological analysis of them. The Seven Last Words from the Cross are an integral part of the liturgy in the Catholic, Protestant, and other Christian traditions.
