Sherrone (Sherrone/Sherrone) Moore is best known as a college football coach, particularly for his time leading the University of Michigan football program. He has recently been in the news both for his coaching success and for off- field issues.

Who he is

Sherrone Moore is an American college football coach and former offensive lineman who became the head football coach at the University of Michigan. He previously played at Butler Community College and the University of Oklahoma before going into coaching.

Coaching career

Moore worked as an assistant coach at Louisville and Central Michigan, primarily coaching tight ends and helping those teams to multiple winning seasons and bowl appearances. He joined Michigan’s staff in 2018 as tight ends coach, then became co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, leading units that won national awards for offensive line play.

Michigan head coach role

In January 2024, Moore was promoted to become Michigan’s 21st head football coach and the first Black head coach in the program’s history. In his first season, he guided Michigan to an 8–5 record with notable wins over rivals such as Ohio State and Michigan State, plus a bowl victory over Alabama.

Recent firing and controversy

In December 2025, Michigan dismissed Moore as head coach, ending his tenure after roughly two seasons. Reports indicate the firing followed findings that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, on top of earlier NCAA-related discipline for deleting text messages tied to the sign-stealing investigation, even though those messages were later recovered and shown not to contain incriminating content.
