The Nile River flows from south to north. It originates in the highlands near Lake Victoria in East Africa, which is at a much higher elevation (about 1,134 meters above sea level) compared to the Mediterranean Sea, where it empties. This elevation difference causes the river to flow northward through northeastern Africa, passing through countries such as Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt, before reaching the Mediterranean Sea at its delta near Alexandria
. The northward flow is due to gravity pulling the water downhill from the higher southern regions to the lower northern areas. Although it may seem unusual since many rivers flow south, the direction of a river's flow depends on the terrain's elevation rather than compass direction
