Comets orbit around the Sun. They have elliptical orbits that bring them close to the Sun and then take them far away. There are two main types of comet orbits: short-period comets, which orbit the Sun in less than 200 years and generally originate from the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune, and long-period comets, which have orbits lasting hundreds to millions of years and are thought to come from the distant Oort Cloud surrounding the solar system.
