To get a REAL ID in Pennsylvania, you need to provide the following original or certified documents at a PennDOT Driver License Center: 1. Proof of Identity and Lawful Status (choose one):

  • U.S. birth certificate with a raised/embossed seal issued by a government agency (not a hospital certificate)
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card
  • Certificate of U.S. Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS-240, DS-1350, or FS-545)
  • Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550 or N-570)
  • Unexpired Employment Authorization Card (Form I-766 or I-688B)
  • Valid, unexpired Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) (Form I-551)
  • Unexpired foreign passport with valid U.S. visa and I-94 form indicating permanent residence

2. Proof of Social Security Number (one document showing your full SSN and current legal name):

  • Social Security card
  • W-2 form
  • SSA-1099 form
  • Non-SSA-1099 form
  • Pay stub

3. Proof of Pennsylvania Residency (two documents):

  • Current, unexpired PA driver’s license or photo ID card
  • PA vehicle registration card
  • Auto insurance card
  • Utility bill (cellphone, cable, electric, gas) with your name and address
  • Post-marked mail/package labels
  • W-2 form or pay stub
  • Lease agreement or mortgage documents

4. Proof of Legal Name Change (if applicable):

  • Certified marriage certificate(s)
  • Court order for name or date of birth change
  • Certified amended birth certificate
  • For gender designation changes, a certified amended birth certificate or completed DL-32 form

You must bring original or certified copies; photocopies are not accepted. Even if you already have a PA driver’s license or ID, these documents are required to upgrade to a REAL ID. The REAL ID is optional but required starting May 7, 2025, to board domestic flights, enter military bases, or access federal facilities that require ID
